Dr Karthik Gopal

Interventional and Structural Cardiologist

MBBS

Dr. Karthik Gopal is a highly qualified interventional and structural cardiologist with clinical interests spanning general cardiology, coronary intervention, percutaneous valve procedures, and other complex structural heart interventions.

Dr Gopal earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with a Gold Medal from the Harvard-affiliated Sri Ramachandra University in India. He began his medical career at JIPMER Hospital in Pondicherry before migrating to Australia in 2007. In addition to successfully completing the Australian Medical Council licensing examinations, he obtained postgraduate degrees in Infection and Immunity from the University of Sydney and in Public Health from the University of Western Sydney.

He began his Australian clinical career as a Career Medical Officer at Coffs Harbour Hospital in New South Wales, before moving to Queensland to undertake physician training at The Prince Charles Hospital, including a secondment to Rockhampton Hospital. He went on to complete advanced cardiology training at both The Townsville Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital, attaining Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2018.

Dr Gopal subsequently completed a two-year advanced coronary interventional fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital, where he developed proficiency in procedures such as primary angioplasty, coronary angiography, intravascular imaging, physiological coronary assessment, right heart catheterisation, and complex coronary interventions.

​

He further expanded his expertise by completing a prestigious one-year structural cardiology fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts) in London, the UK’s highest-volume quaternary referral centre. There, he gained extensive experience in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), as well as other valvular and structural procedures, including mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valve interventions, and closure of congenital defects such as ASD, VSD, PDA, and PFO.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Gopal maintains a strong academic and research interest. He has participated in multiple clinical trials as a sub-investigator and holds an appointment as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland. His academic background in public health complements his evidence-based approach to both research and clinical care. He is also passionate about clinical teaching and regularly mentors trainees and junior doctors.

Dr Karthik Gopal consults at Gympie Road Medical Centre on a monthly basis, with appointments available on Fridays.
